The Beginner’s Guide to Microdosing CBD: How to Find Your Perfect Dose

Microdosing CBD

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis plants that has been associated with a range of health benefits. One evolving approach to using CBD is microdosing, which involves taking small amounts of the compound throughout the day rather than a single large dose. However, finding the right dosage for microdosing can be challenging, and it’s important to approach the process with care. In this guide, we’ll review the basics of microdosing CBD, including the benefits, techniques, and best practices for finding your ideal dosage.

Jump to the section most important to you

What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing is the practice of taking very small doses of a substance, typically a drug or supplement, to achieve a specific effect. In the case of CBD, microdosing involves taking small amounts of CBD over an extended period to reap its benefits. The main difference between microdosing and regular dosing is that microdosing involves taking a much smaller amount of the substance than what is typically recommended. The goal of microdosing is to experience the benefits of the substance without the risk of adverse side effects that may occur with larger doses.

People have been increasingly using microdosing for potent psychotropic drugs and hallucinogens, such as LSD and mushrooms.  The practice has become more popular with other substances such as ketamine, marijuana, and now CBD.  Presumably the idea is to minimize undesired effects and still reap the benefits.

How To Microdose CBD?

Microdosing CBD can involve using different methods such as tinctures and droppers, edibles, capsules, and topicals. It is important to determine the right dosage for you in order to achieve the desired effects. This can be done by starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it over time, also known as “start low and go slow.” Keeping a journal can also be helpful to track the effects of different dosages. CBD effects in general are low-key.  It is helpful to set an alarm so you can do a quick self check-in about the results you are hoping to see.

It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement or medication. Individual factors such as weight, metabolism, and tolerance level should also be considered when determining the right dosage. Finally, it’s important to be patient and give the CBD time to take effect.

A full dose of CBD is typically 20 to 60mg.  A microdose might begin as small as 5mg, taken several times during the day.

Different Methods Of Microdosing CBD

CBD Gummies

Microdosing CBD gummies can provide a discreet and convenient way to take CBD throughout the day. For microdosing CBD gummies, it is recommended to start with a low dose and gradually increase until the desired effect is achieved. The recommended dosage for microdosing CBD gummies is typically between 5-10mg per serving. Most gummies are 10 or 25mg per piece. So you would be cutting gummies into smaller portions. When looking for the right CBD gummies for microdosing, it is important to consider factors such as the concentration of CBD, the quality of ingredients, and the reputation of thebrand.

CBD Tinctures

Tinctures are a popular method for microdosing CBD because they allow for precise dosing and are easy to use. CBD tinctures usually come in small bottles with a dropper attached to the lid, allowing you to measure out the exact amount of CBD you want to take. To microdose with tinctures, start with a low dose, such as 3-5mg of CBD, and gradually increase by 3-5mg until you find your perfect dose. Our tinctures are 2,000 mg CBD per ounce, so 3 mg per drop. To take a tincture, simply drop the desired amount under your tongue and hold it there for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. This allows the CBD to absorb into your bloodstream more quickly, providing faster effects. Keep a journal of your dosages and how you feel to track your progress and adjust your dose as needed. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting a CBD regimen.

Summary

In summary, microdosing CBD can be an effective way to experience the benefits of cannabis without feeling overwhelmed by its effects. By starting low and going slow, you can find the right dosage that works best for you. Microdosing methods such as tinctures, edibles, capsules, and topicals can provide different experiences and benefits, and it’s important to consider individual factors when determining the right dosage.

When it comes to microdosing with CBD gummies, it’s important to find a high-quality product with a consistent dosage. Starting with a low dose of 5-10mg and gradually increasing as needed can help you find the perfect dosage for your needs.

Overall, microdosing can be a great way to explore the benefits of CBD and cannabis in a safe and controlled manner. As with any new supplement or health routine, it’s important to do your research and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

We hope this guide has been helpful in understanding the basics of microdosing with CBD. Remember to start low, go slow, and be patient in finding the right dosage and method for you.

The Symphony Of CBD

From The Jacksonville Review – September 2022 Issue

In the evolving popularity of cannabinoids, lead players have emerged. CBD and THC are the stars of the show. But there are over 100 supporting actors in the ensemble. There is CBC, CBG, CBN, and many more. Each brings a unique characteristic, and together they are something of a symphony. With the 2018 farm bill, research institutions began studying these fascinating compounds.

A Cast of Cannabinoids

The heroes in the show are CBD and THC. CBD is cannabidiol, THC is tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD is primarily sought after for help with chronic pain, anxiety and sleep. It is used for many other conditions such as seizures, Crohn’s, etc. But those are the big 3. Cousin THC is known primarily for getting you “high.” But that is just one facet. THC is also often used for Nerve Pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s tremors, Nausea and Glaucoma. People who use THC for medical conditions often find the high effect to be a distraction. It might be tolerable on occasion, but if you are trying to work, being high isn’t always helpful.

whitney with hemp plantsFun fact—CBD and THC share the same chemical formula. 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen and two oxygen. They are just arranged differently. Interesting as well is that humans have cannabinoid receptors built in. Why would we develop such a specialized translator? Perhaps a subject for another day.

Horn Creek Farms only works with high CBD plants. CBD geneticists have bred THC content to much lower levels than occur naturally. Our products must contain less than .3% THC. However, the presence of even that small amount of THC seems to increase efficacy. Some of the best products are made from what is called full spectrum concentrates. This means that all of the afore-mentioned “minor” cannabinoids are present. We refer to this synergy as “the entourage effect.”

hemp flower up closeIn one of our more interesting cases, a woman was suffering trigeminal neuralgia. This is an extremely painful nerve condition in the face. Her skin was tremendously sensitive to touch, and she experienced regular shooting pain. She and her husband had exhausted traditional cures. She asked what we might have. We created increasingly potent CBD blends for her to try. They helped, but not completely. Ultimately, she found a 50:50 blend of CBD and THC topical salve was the best solution.

As we discussed, CBD gets all the attention. But what our plants produce is Cannabidiolic acid, or CBDa. CBDa is converted to CBD through heat and pressure. This frequently happens during extraction, but it doesn’t have to. We are learning that CBDa has properties similar to CBD, but it also has unique features. CBDa is much more bioavailable. So CBDa is more potent and easier for the body to put to use. Other cannabinoids have acidic versions as well.

Here are the most common “minor” cannabinoids:

CBG—Cannabigerol is showing signs to be effective for inflammation, pain, mood disorders, anti-bacteria, anti-fungal and many others. CBG is getting a lot of attention from the medical research community. Recently, researchers at OSU found that CBGa and CBDa showed an ability to prevent the COVID-19 virus from entering human cells. I find that the addition of CBG particularly seems to accelerate the effects of other cannabinoids. CBGa is known as the “mother cannabinoid” from which all other cannabinoids develop.

dreamland cbn cbg cbd sleep tincture
Dreamland CBN Tincture

CBC—Cannbichromene appears to do well for inflammation and many of the other ailments mentioned—pain, mood, neurological problems, etc. What is different is how CBC is absorbed, and the receptors it uses. It can be absorbed more effectively by some people.

CBN—Sleep! CBN is wonderful for sleep issues. It doesn’t knock you out, but it keeps you asleep. It is wonderful for those who can only sleep for a few hours before they wake. Our most popular blends include CBN for this. The problem is that CBN is almost always an isomer—manipulated in a lab from other cannabinoids. It just doesn’t occur in high levels naturally. And Oregon banned CBD isomers in July, due to some unregulated isomers which were being used as a psychoactive. We do make CBN products, but they are only for sale outside the state.

CBDv—Cannabidivarin. Good for mood and anticonvulsant.

Extraction Methods

Full Spectrum oil contains all of the goodness from the plant. People do home extractions using crock pots and MCT oils such as coconut oil. Our lab uses CO2 to do the same. These are highly-effective extracts. Unfortunately, they taste awful. Best used in non- ingested forms. The industry has begun to refer to full spectrum in more broad terms. Full Spectrum oils can be made palatable and more concentrated when distilled. Distillate removes terpenes and flavonoids. This is what we use in tinctures, edibles, gummies and chocolate.

Broad Spectrum oil refers to a full spectrum distillate which has had all THC removed. Many CBD users do not want any THC present. This is often so that use will not trigger drug test results positive for THC. Others might be sensitive to THC or simply not like it, even at .3%.

Isolates are a powder form of just a single cannabinoid. They are easy to blend and formulate products. They are pure and easily measured. However, they do not take advantage of the entourage effect, unless there is distillate in another ingredient. Products made with only isolate can seem potent on paper, but the effects are diminished.

The final thing to know are the various delivery methods.

Edibles are the most convenient, but CBD through the digestive system takes longer to process. It is also less efficient for absorption, though effects last longer. Edibles such as gummies and capsules are the most common form. Sublingual usage of tinctures is more efficient and faster to be absorbed. It bypasses the liver.

Topicals/ transdermal absorption is my favorite for local pain. Why spread the dosage over your entire system if you just want CBD for your sore knee? Many people have both systemic and local pain. In these cases, I suggest an edible in combination with topical for hot spots.

Inhaling. A surprising number of people consume CBD in various forms using smoking or vape devices. This is the most efficient method in terms of absorption, and time to effects. The majority of our customers are uncomfortable with smoking and vaping. But not all. Just today I spoke with the 60-year-old spouse of a Nevada police captain. She was fighting through a bout with cancer and found that the traditional joint delivery method was what worked best for her. She laughed about how she has come full circle from her 20’s.

There you have the cast of cannabinoids, extracted concentrates and forms to use. I am excited to see how this knowledge base will expand with scientific studies in addition to the anecdotal stories we collect.

OSU’s Hemp and SARS-CoV-2 Research

Do CBDa and CBGa help prevent COVID infection? An interesting study emerging from OSU suggests this is possible. Researchers found that both CBDa and CBGa bind to spike proteins on the virus which blocks a critical step in the infection process. CBGa and CBDa are the acidic precursors to CBD and CBG. It is important to note that the vast majority of formulated CBD products do not contain the acidic versions. We have specific extraction processes that maintain the acidic versions.

Specifically, our CBDa capsules are made with CO2 extraction techniques to preserve the acid cannabinoid. CBGa is even more challenging to find in formulated products. Our most popular is the concentrated collection of CBGa-rich trichomes. Customers consume this blend raw by adding it to tinctures, oils, or drinks. Our CBG white kief tested at 44% CBGa by weight. 1 gram will contain 440 mg of CBGa!  We have also had feedback from users who are pressing their own CBGa pills and CBGa capsules.

If you wish to make your own CBDa capsules or pills from CBDa oil or kief, there are many home capsule kits for less than $100.  Instructions forthcoming shortly.  Watch this blog for details.

About the study:

After launching their Global Hemp Innovation Center in 2018, Oregon State University has fast-tracked its research initiatives. Some of these research initiatives include testing Hemp’s Antimicrobial Activity and whether hemp biomass could be used as an animal feed ingredient. On Monday, January 10th, Oregon State’s Richard van Breemen along with Oregon State’s College of Pharmacy, Linus Pauling Institute, and scientists from OSHU published a research paper that demonstrated in vitro that certain cannabinoids block cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the emerging variants. They discovered that two (CBDa & CBGa) cannabinoid acids bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This spike protein is the same target that current vaccines and antibodies go after, which shows the potential in disrupting infection and disease progression.

This is not the first time that CBD and other cannabinoids have been used in SARS research, but it could provide insight into why some of the other studies have not been as widely considered successful. A Brazilian study completed in January 2021 showed that a daily administration of 300 mg CBD for 14 days failed to alter the clinical evolution of COVID-19. Israeli research firms Eybna and CannaSoul are teaming up using an NT-VRL compound based on a 2002 SARS study that found terpenes to be effective antiviral agents. They even combined their NT-VRL compound with CBD to find that it was more than twice as effective as just CBD or Dexamethasone (a common corticosteroids treatment for inflammation) in treating cytokine storms.

Utilizing affinity selection mass spectrometry (simply put, incubating the target with a blend of potential ligands or things that might bind to it), Oregon State’s own Richard van Breemen said,

“We identified several cannabinoid ligands and ranked them by affinity to the spike protein. The two cannabinoids with the highest affinities for the spike protein were CBDA and CBGA, and they were confirmed to block infection. These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans. They have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2. CBDA and CBGA are produced by the hemp plant as precursors to CBD and CBG, which are familiar to many consumers. However, they are different from the acids and are not contained in hemp products.”

Oregon State’s Richard van Breeman also mentioned that early research showed that licochalcone A, found in Licorice, could also bind to the spike protein, but further research and funding would be needed to test it on a live sample.

Horn Creek is proud to cheer on our friends over at Oregon State in discovering more abstract ways to utilize Hemp. We understand that this is a building block study and not a smoking gun, but local excitement is large and we all love supporting our local community. A tip of our farmer’s cap is deserved, well done.

Hemp Products: How To Find The Right CBD For Your Needs

There are so many hemp products and so many different choices to be made in order to utilize the plant.

Not only is hemp great for CBD, but it’s also used for food and even clothing. It is a plant that can sustainably create so many products. And because of its versatility, it has once again become a significant cash crop as it was many years ago. With the 2014 Farm Bill, hemp has made a big-time comeback, and thoughts around the plant are starting to shift.

We here at Horn Creek Hemp believe in the power of this plant and the products we can create from it. Our farm specializes in creating organic hemp products utilizing CBD to help with life’s many aches and pain, among other things. Here is a look at some of those great products:

Salves:

These are great topicals that can be applied to the skin in a targeted way to help with a list of issues you could be dealing with. Salves absorb into the skin a bit slower than a lotion would, and because the skin can absorb and retain the salve to help the affected area, it can provide a time-released effect. Salves have been helpful for soreness, chronic muscle and joint pain, and skin conditions.

Flower:

A flower is the bud of the hemp plant, and in the case of utilizing it for CBD, it’s a female plant bred to contain high levels of cannabidiol and low levels of THC. We take pride in growing and harvesting top of the line hemp flower with high levels of CBD.

Bath Salts:

A CBD infused soak in the bathtub can be relaxing and rejuvenating. With CBD bath salts you are able to utilize the power of CBD as it is absorbed into the skin to soothe, fortify, and moisturize.

Lavender CBD Body Butter:

The aim of our body butter is much like a lotion. It just takes the lotion to another level by harnessing the benefits of CBD with a richer consistency. The addition of lavender is to help with inflammation, as it is also an antioxidant for the skin. It can be used in a targeted way and often reacts well with the skin.

Gummies:

Who doesn’t love gummy candies? And infusing it with CBD takes it to a whole new level! CBD gummies are a great way to utilize CBD.

Tinctures:

This is if you are looking for something that packs a bit of a punch. With a tincture you are getting a high concentration of CBD, giving you a more potent dose. Tinctures typically come in a glass bottle with a dropper lid to help to measure out the dosage. If you are using it for the first time, you should start small and build from there as to not overdo it.

Hemp is a passion of ours and is not something we take lightly. We know the power these products can have because we have experienced it first hand.

Like anything, you should always do your own research on the product before using it. The Hemp industry is evolving rapidly.   That’s why we put such an emphasis on creating high-quality, organic products aimed at helping you live your best life

Hemp Tea: A Ritual Full Of Benefits

Are you the type who loves to cozy up with a good cup of tea? While your average tea may provide health and relaxation advantages, CBD hemp tea takes these factors to another level. And the best part—It’s as simple as making any other tea.  While drinking your CBD may seem like one of many new trends surrounding the world of hemp, people have been drinking this herbal concoction for thousands of years and it’s easy to see why.

Benefits

This powerful blend of leaves and flowers (sometimes even the root) of the cannabis plant is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Plus, it can be a lot

tastier than other forms of concentrated cannabinoids.

● Anxiety And Depression

CBD in hemp affects the brain’s serotonin receptors which have anxiolytic (anxiety relieving) effects. Since serotonin is the key hormone responsible for balancing

our moods, happiness, and overall well-being, hemp tea may be able to help those who are suffering from hormonal imbalances.

● Sleep Disorders

Like chamomile and lavender, hemp can make it easier to fall asleep. Several studies have shown that CBD positively affects the part of the brain that is responsible for sleep patterns, benefitting people who are looking to improve their REM sleep.

Digestive Benefits

If you’re a tea drinker, you know that ginger helps with both digestion and nausea, and hemp tea can be just as effective. Serotonin release powered by CBD blocks feelings of pain that can be triggered by digestive discomfort. This beverage can offer relief from IBS, and nausea due to cancer treatment.

How To Brew

Basic recipes call for one teaspoon of dry hemp leaves per one cup of water. Using a tea bag or loose leaf tea infuser, submerge the mixture into a cup of water from 175F to boiling.  Let steep for 5 minutes and enjoy!  We frequently add CBD tincture for higher dosages.  The best method is to add a slice of Meyer lemon to your cup, add your preferred measure of tincture, then pour the finished tea over this.

For a more flavorful experience, we’ve created a beautiful herbal blend with lemon balm, peppermint, and chamomile that is caffeine free. It makes for the perfect

before-bed beverage. Keep in mind that if you’d like to add a tincture to your favorite tea, this oil is not water soluble, so you’ll need a fatty component such as coconut oil or butter to help your body better absorb it.

If you enjoy drinking tea, hemp tea can add even more value to your ritual by soothing the mind, body, and soul.

How Hemp Lotion Could Benefit Your Skin

There are so many ways to utilize the benefits that come from the hemp plant. One great way to get the benefits of the product is CBD hemp lotion. The main reason for using it is that it typically is very beneficial for the skin.

But as with everything, it’s important to understand what makes up this product and why it may be a good option to utilize.

What Is Hemp Lotion?

It’s pretty basic the way hemp lotion is made. The idea is taking lotion, which already is moisturizing, and adding a hemp-based CBD product to it to give it even more health benefits.

In most cases, it’s made with hemp seed oil which has tons of benefits because of the compounds it contains.

Hemp seed oil typically contains lots of naturally occurring materials including vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids that have various benefits.

It has a 3 to 1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3, respectively. This is the ideal balance for fast absorption for moisturizing without clogging skin pores. These fatty acids are known as “good fats” and a healthy balance of these can help not only with your skin but fatty acids have shown to help with heart health as well.

It also contains vitamins A, C, and E which have shown to have anti-wrinkle properties and have shown to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.

So with all of these compounds working together, hemp seed oil’s aim is to help with multiple ailments. Here is what anecdotal evidence has shown hemp lotion to aid with:

  • Eczema
  • Atopic Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Itchy skin

Finding The Right Product:

Finding the right hemp lotion for you can be a bit of trial and error, just like with any hemp or CBD products. That makes doing your homework on what you are purchasing extremely important.

You should know what kind of hemp products are being used whether it’s CBD oil or hemp seed oil in the lotion. Some lotions do contain full-spectrum CBD oil which also has its place, but you have to find the right product for you.

That leads to the actual use of the product as well. Starting with small doses and working up from there is the key to success, making sure that you react well to the lotion before using it all over your body.

This is why all of us here at Horn Creek Hemp Farm want to make sure we are cultivating the best hemp. It all starts with farming the right way and by growing organic crops. By fostering soil designed to help the hemp grow and utilizing the ecosystem we live in to keep the plants safe from bugs, we do everything in our power to harvest the cleanest and highest quality hemp.

CBD Bath Salts: Relaxation & Relief

There are so many ways to utilize CBD so finding the right product for you can be a bit of a process to find what works best. But one of the easiest ways to utilize CBD and its potential benefits is simply by taking a bath. Yep—CBD bath salts are a great way to take care of your skin and just relax.

It’s as easy as just taking a bath and soaking in the cannabinoids.

But exactly how do those bath salts work and why might they be helpful?

How do they work?

So when you put CBD into your bath water and soak it in, the idea is your skin will absorb the compounds and take advantage of them.

Typically the skin is not a super permeable layer, but when it comes to CBD, the cannabinoids and salts are easily absorbed by the skin and it has been shown to have lots of helpful properties.

Bath products pass through the epidermis, glands, and hair follicles on the skin’s surface. Then the real work begins as the vitamins, minerals proteins and fatty acids get to work. .

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids:

Hemp has the optimal ratio to help soften and smooth hair and skin.

Vitamins A and D:

These help with skin repair and keeping skin healthy.

Vitamins C and E:

Antioxidants rejuvenate the skin’s protective outer layer.

This is a big difference compared to consuming CBD through an edible or oil because the CBD will not make its way to the bloodstream which allows for a more targeted approach when soaking the CBD.

How can CBD bath salts help?

When it comes to CBD bath salts utilizing full-spectrum CBD is key because that gives you the whole slate of compounds that have been shown to help in various ways.

All of these factors and time-proven salts work together to help:

  • Pain relief in muscles and bones
  • Relief for skin conditions (rashes, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Help with acne

There are just so many great reasons to give CBD bath salts a try. As farmers who spend countless hours in the fields, we can’t tell you how great it feels to get into a hot CBD bath at the end of the day.

That is one of the reasons we make our very own Horn Creek Farm Three Salts CBD Soak. By combining Epsom salt, Himalayan Salt, and Redmond Dead Sea Salt with our top of the line CBD, we have created bliss. This bath salt contains 160 mg of full-spectrum CBD per ounce.* It’s very effective at minimizing the wear and tear on our bodies.

Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What Sets Them Apart

There seems to be a veil of mystery surrounding hemp and CBD products.

Let’s break it down. Cannabis Sativa has two variants: hemp and marijuana. Hemp contains CBD and a very small amount of THC. Marijuana contains both CBD and THC.

So, what’s the difference between hemp and CBD oil? Well, for starters hemp oil can be two different things — confusing, we know. Some describe hemp oil as a CBD-rich product that is extracted from special parts of the hemp plant. While other times hemp oil, also known as hemp seed oil, refers to a product with little to no CBD.

CBD oil can be derived from hemp or marijuana plants, is rich in CBD, and is used to address a number of ‘wellness’ issues. Whatever you choose, make sure you read the label first to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want. Okay, let’s take a deeper dive into hemp oil vs CBD oil.

Hemp Seed Oil, What Is It And How Do You Use It?

As you might expect, hemp seed oil comes from hemp seeds and has little to no CBD content in it. In fact, the CBD content is so small that it is considered “non-existent.”

Hemp oil also has been shown to help your skin as well as benefit various skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis.

Hemp seeds have numerous other health benefits as well. They contain protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids, all of which have been proven to be helpful for the body. When it comes to picking out CBD oil or hemp oil, it is important to consider what benefits you are after.

Each variety comes to the table with different reasons to be utilized. Hemp can be so valuable for people to use, and that’s why the industry is growing across the country and becoming more commonly accepted as an alternative type of medicine.

CBD Oil: Health Properties And More

Okay, now that we’ve covered hemp oil, let’s discuss CBD oil. CBD oil is the product that people often talk about in conjunction with alternative medicine and mental health. Here at Horn Creek Hemp, we have seen the benefits of this product first hand, which is what really led us to this business.

It is important to note that while CBD has many strong proponents, it is untested as a healing agent. We have our own experience which was very positive. We also have feedback from customers who use the raw material in a variety of ways. We would encourage you to do your research on the health benefits of CBD.

CBD oil is extracted and created differently than hemp oil. Meaning, the CBD oil primarily comes from the flowers of the hemp plant, which are the parts of the plant where cannabidiol is found. CBD oil can be extracted from either hemp or marijuana plants which are both different varieties of the cannabis plant. There are multiple ways that CBD oil can be extracted from the plant, and each method can create CBD oil.

So there you go! When it comes to differentiating between hemp oil vs CBD oil, each can help you out in different ways. And of course, we have some great Horn Creek Hemp products for you to check out!
